My quickSort function nested inside my useEffect hook is supposed to be called only once, but instead it creates an infinite loop where quickSort keeps getting called. I can't take the code inside quickSort out of its function and directly insert it into my useEffect … WebuseEffect runs by default after every render of the component (thus causing an effect). When placing useEffect in your component you tell React you want to run the callback as an effect. React will run the effect after rendering and after performing the DOM updates.
